Artist Statement
My work tells stories. As an Afro-Caribbean woman my work appropriates forms from overlapping motifs, identity and history of multiple cultures. They are then layered with my personal experiences and the experiences of others. I call my work Neo-Caribbean or culturally infused art. Printmaking and Sculpture are currently the main methodology to represent my stories and concepts. Five key words are considered during the developmental stages of the work, these are: Headship, Storytelling, Connectivity, Layering, and Light.
Ancient Morals Modern Attitude – AMMA is my artist name/identity (HeadshipTM).
The King Head is an elongated image which repeats in my work for over 13 years. It is the masculine representation of AMMA. The Queen Head followed during the Masters program and the feminine representation of AMMA.
